“I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation of the Sick Berth Branch as a whole to who, the Royal Navy owes so much.  They are unique, with their multitudinous skills, their wisdom both in medicine and in human relationships and have contributed to much to the well-being of the Service in peace and the very necessary expert support in War.  Often unappreciated until emergency occurs, they work quietly and efficiently dealing with every situation which arises.  They are the backbone of the Medical Branch, totally irreplaceable; there is no equivalent in civilian life or other sister services, to match their ability, knowledge and experience, and no facilities outside the Service itself and its Naval hospitals for training to such high standards.”  Surgeon Rear Admiral J.
